Is Your Skincare Making Your Skin Worse?

on Apr 16 2026
Signs Your Routine Is Damaging Your Skin Barrier If your skin feels more irritated, sensitive, or prone to breakouts than ever — despite using “good” skincare products — your routine might be doing more harm than good. In today’s world of actives, acids, and endless product layering, it’s easy to overdo it. And when that happens, your skin’s natural protective barrier — your skin’s first line of defence — can become compromised. “Yes — over-cleansing, over-exfoliating, and combining too many active ingredients are among the most common causes of skin barrier damage. The signs can look surprisingly similar to the problems you were trying to fix in the first place.” From an Ayurvedic perspective, this is a sign of imbalance, not lack of effort. What Is the Skin Barrier — and Why Does It Matter? The skin barrier — also called the stratum corneum — is the outermost layer of skin. It acts as a natural shield, sealing in moisture and protecting against irritants, pollutants, and environmental stress. In Ayurveda, this protective layer reflects the skin’s innate intelligence — its ability to maintain harmony between inner vitality and outer exposure. When it functions well, your skin is calm, clear, and resilient. When it’s disrupted, even well-chosen products can aggravate rather than heal. A healthy skin barrier: •       Locks in moisture and prevents water loss •       Keeps irritants, bacteria, and toxins out •       Maintains smooth, balanced, resilient skin When it’s damaged, even high-quality products won’t work as intended — and may make things worse. How Do You Know If Your Skin Barrier Is Damaged? Your skin’s protective balance rarely shifts overnight — but it will signal when something is wrong. Common signs of a compromised skin barrier include: •       Persistent redness or sensitivity •       Breakouts that don’t respond to treatment •       Tightness or dryness after cleansing •       A burning or stinging sensation when applying products •       Flaky, dull, or uneven skin texture If this sounds familiar, your skin may not need more treatment — it may need repair and rest. What Damages the Skin Barrier? Common Skincare Habits to Reconsider Modern skincare often encourages layering multiple products and actives — but more isn’t always better. Common habits that can disrupt your skin’s natural balance: •       Over-exfoliation:Using scrubs, AHAs, BHAs, or enzymes too frequently can strip the skin of its natural protective oils. •       Too many active ingredients at once:Combining retinoids, acids, and vitamin C without careful sequencing can overwhelm the skin. •       Harsh cleansers:Foaming or stripping cleansers disrupt the skin’s natural pH and microbiome. •       Over-treating acne:Aggressive spot treatments can dry out the skin, triggering more oil production and worsening breakouts over time. The Ayurvedic View: How Skin Barrier Damage Relates to Dosha Imbalance In Ayurveda, when the skin’s natural protection is weakened, it often reflects a disturbance in the doshas — particularly an aggravation of: •       Pitta (heat):leading to inflammation, redness, and sensitivity •       Vata (dryness):leading to dehydration, flakiness, and premature ageing When both are aggravated simultaneously, the skin becomes reactive, fragile, and slow to heal. Rather than adding more products to correct the problem, Ayurveda focuses on restoring harmony — calming inflammation, deeply nourishing the skin, and allowing it to recover its natural rhythm. How to Support Skin Barrier Repair When your skin’s natural protection is weakened, the goal is not to fix it instantly — it is to restore balance through gentle, consistent care. Your skin benefits from: •       Simple, non-stripping cleansing •       Ingredients that calm and soothe inflammation •       Deep hydration and barrier-supportive nourishment •       A consistent, minimal routine — fewer products, applied with intention When given the right support, your skin has a remarkable ability to repair itself. Ayurvedic Ingredients That Support a Healthy Skin Barrier At AyurScience, our Purity and Clarity ranges are formulated around the principles of Ayurveda — using botanicals traditionally valued for their ability to calm, protect, and restore the skin’s natural vitality. Both ranges feature our signature AyurActive complex of Amla (Indian Gooseberry) and Tulsi (Holy Basil) — ingredients with a long history of use in Ayurvedic skin care, selected for their potential to support skin vitality, calm inflammation, and promote a clearer, more balanced complexion. The Purity Range — for oily, blemish-prone skin Rooted in Ayurvedic wisdom for balancing excess Pitta and Kapha, the Purity range is designed for skin that is reactive, congested, or prone to breakouts. •       Bakuchiol (Sytenol A):May help reduce the appearance of acne and redness while improving the look of fine lines — a gentler botanical alternative to retinoids. •       Frankincense (Boswellia Serrata):Valued for its traditional antimicrobial properties, suited to blemish-prone and irritated skin. •       Ginger (Zingiber Officinale):Helps soothe redness and support skin texture. •       Manjistha (Rubia Cordifolia):Traditionally used to calm irritated or inflamed skin. •       Turmeric (Curcuma Longa):Rich in antioxidants that may calm irritation and support a healthy-looking complexion. The Clarity Range — for dullness, pigmentation, and uneven tone The Clarity range addresses Vata and Pitta skin concerns, working to brighten, refine, and support more youthful-looking skin. •       Gotu Kola (Centella Asiatica):Supports smoother, plumper-looking skin and may help improve the appearance of photo-ageing. •       Sandalwood (Santalum Spicatum):Traditionally used to support an even complexion. •       Saffron (Crocus sativus):May help protect against free radical damage while brightening the complexion. •       Manjistha (Rubia Cordifolia):Known for its ability to soothe, brighten, and protect against environmental stress. •       Rumex (Rumex Occidentalis):May help even skin tone and reduce the appearance of dark spots. The Bottom Line When your skin feels overwhelmed, reactive, or persistently out of balance, it is often a signal to pause and simplify — not add more. True skin health is not built through intensity. It is built through consistency, nourishment, and respect for the skin’s own intelligence. From an Ayurvedic perspective, when balance is restored, the skin is able to function as it should — calm, resilient, and radiant. Frequently Asked Questions Can your skincare routine actually damage your skin barrier? Yes. Common culprits include over-exfoliating, using too many active ingredients simultaneously, and cleansing with products that are too harsh for your skin type. The damage is often gradual — and its symptoms can look like the original skin concerns you were trying to address.   How long does it take to repair a damaged skin barrier? With a simplified, gentle routine, most people begin to notice improvement within two to four weeks. Full recovery can take longer depending on the degree of disruption. The most important steps are reducing active ingredients, switching to a non-stripping cleanser, and focusing on hydration and nourishment.   What Ayurvedic ingredients help repair the skin barrier? In Ayurvedic practice, ingredients traditionally valued for barrier support include Tulsi (Holy Basil), Amla (Indian Gooseberry), Manjistha, and Turmeric — all of which have a long history of use in addressing inflammation and supporting skin recovery. AyurScience’s Purity and Clarity ranges are formulated around these botanicals.
What is Ayurvedic Skincare? - Ayurscience

What is Ayurvedic Skincare?

on Apr 07 2026
Ayurvedic skincare uses ingredients based on ancient herbal preparations, to support and balance the skin without harmful ingredients. Ayurvedic skincare leverages the ingredients and principles of Ayurvedic medicine, that has been used for centuries in Indian subcontinental culture, to support overall wellbeing and balance.Unlike other natural skincare, Ayurvedic skincare is focused on managing the root cause behind skin concerns, rather than just the visible symptoms. You’ll also find that Ayurvedic skincare is timeless, rather than trend-led and takes a multi-ingredient approach to skin concerns.   What Is Ayurveda? Ayurveda uses botanicals such as herbs, spices, fruit extracts, and essential oils in medicinal quantities for healing. Ayurveda is a system that views wellness as a reflection of internal balance. Therefore, Ayurveda aims to balance the doshas (energies or elements) that control various functions in our bodies. Scientists have conducted studies on the ingredients and methods used in Ayurvedic medicinal practices and confirmed their healing properties, internally inside the body, and externally to the skin. When it comes to skin health, imbalance in a dosha often shows up through common skin concerns such as inflammation, dryness, congestion and more.   Understanding Dosha Skincare Three doshas exist in Ayurveda; Vata (ether and air), Pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (earth and water). Every individual has a unique combination of these energies, with one typically more dominant.  Factors such as stress, diet, climate, hormones or lifestyle factors can move your primary dosha out of balance.  While your dominant dosha shapes your skin's natural tendencies, any dosha can fall out of balance. Vata imbalance often shows up as dryness and sensitivity. Pitta imbalance can manifest as redness and reactivity, while Kapha that is off balance flares up with congestion and oiliness. The Benefits of a Holistic Skincare Routine Ayurveda believes that beautiful skin is the result of a holistic approach to your health and is a reflection of internal balance. We all have an understanding of how our dietary choices, exercise habits and stress levels can influence our organs, and tend to play out on our skin. That's why fitness, stress reduction, adequate hydration and optimal nutrition are key for complete health. These lifestyle factors then become the foundation to skin health, where good-quality, natural skincare is the next step for providing further nourishment and balance for the skin. We’ve learned the power of a holistic approach to skin health, and advocate for skincare from the inside out.Why Embrace an Ayurvedic Skincare Routine   At AyurScience, we have two herbal skincare ranges, Purity and Clarity, inspired by the principles of Ayurveda to complete your daily skincare ritual. Both ranges feature our signature AyurActive complex of Amla (Indian Gooseberry) and Tulsi (Holy Basil), traditionally used to support skin vitality, help slow visible signs of ageing, calm inflammation, protect against environmental stress, and promote a clearer, more balanced complextion.   The Purity Range Rooted in Ayurvedic wisdom for balancing excess Pitta and Kapha, our Purity range is designed for oily, blemish-prone skin. The ingredients deliver natural skincare for sensitive skin that soothes redness and irritation and combats breakouts. ●       Bakuchiol (Sytenol A): Bakuchiol combats acne, hyperpigmentation, and improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles just like retinoids, but without the undesirable effects. ●       Frankincense (Pure-Phen) (Boswellia Serrata): Frankincense is known for its antimicrobial properties, making it effective for those who struggle with acne and skin irritation. ●      Ginger (Zingiber Officinale): Soothes redness and inflammation, and improves skin texture help clear blemishes. ●       Turmeric (TEGO Tumerone ORG) (Curcuma Longa): Turmeric has antioxidant properties that soothe irritation and promote radiance. Clarity Range Our Clarity range speaks to Vata and Pitta skin concerns, for those who struggle with dull skin, pigmentation, and discolouration. The ingredients brighten, clarify, and refine the skin and prevent premature ageing.    Some of the ingredients we use are: ●       Gotu Kola (part of the WhiteTen complex) Centella Asiatica: Gotu Kola supports smoother and plumper-looking skin and helps address the appearance of photo-ageing. ●    Sandalwood (Santalum Spicatum): Sandalwood helps prevent premature ageing through its antioxidant properties and, also helps prevent excessive melanin production, combating discolouration caused by ageing and pregnancy. ●    Saffron (Crocus sativus): Helps fight the visible signs of ageing by protecting the skin from free radical damage and naturally brightening the complexion. ●       Manjistha (Rubia Cordifolia): Manjistha soothes irritation, brightens the skin, and protects the skin from damage. ●    Rumex (Tyrostat 11) (Rumex Occidentalis): Rumex helps to even out skin tone and is effective for lightening dark marks. Conclusion Good skin health begins with dinacharya. This is a traditional Ayurvedic notion, where the idea of daily rituals of self-care also work to balance the body and the mind. It can be as simple as taking a moment to apply a gentle cleanser or soothing hydration lotion. Ayurveda teaches us that the key to lasting change is consistency rather than perfection so it’s key to focus on the small steps you can take every day. Explore the difference that an Ayurvedic beauty routine can bring to your day and night.
Skin Pigmentation – Impact on skin ageing and what you can do about it - Ayurscience

Skin Pigmentation – Impact on skin ageing and what you can do about it

on Feb 27 2026
Our skin often tells a story, of the joys and lows, but also of the months just passed. Seasons take their toll on our skin. For example, in summer the intense ultraviolet (UV) exposure, intense heat, outdoor activities and partying leaves a legacy of photoageing, inflammation, and uneven pigmentation. In the world of modern dermatology and ancient Ayurveda, this isn't just "sun damage", it is the visible result of a process known as inflamm-aging – inflammation that leads to skin-ageing, and skin pigmentation. At AyurScience, an Australian brand founded by second-generation pharmacists, we bridge the gap between 5,000 years of herbal tradition and science precision. By understanding inflamm-aging, we can move beyond quick fixes to a routine that supports repair and rebalances the skin. 1. What is Inflamm-aging, and what causes skin pigmentation? Inflamm-aging is a term used to describe the link between chronic, low-grade inflammation and the acceleration of the ageing process. Exposure to toxins, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, environmental pollutants and even skin products that irritate the skin creates a rush of reactive oxygen species (ROS), damaging skin cells. The cause of skin pigmentation is from this oxidative stress that triggers a cascade of pro-inflammatory signalling proteins which overstimulate pigment-producing skin cells (melanocytes). The result is an irregular distribution of melanin, resulting in darkening age spots on the hands and face, pigmentation on the face, redness in the skin, and uneven skin-tone. Summer is usually a major contributor to skin pigmentation on the face, and other exposed areas, like the hands,  given the heightened exposure to UV damage. 2. Hormones and Menopause Skin During menopause skin is impacted with a dip in estrogen levels reducing the skin’s natural collagen production and structural elasticity. This hormonal transition often makes the skin more prone to "hot flush redness" and sensitivity. The weakened skin matrix causes ageing fine lines and skin pigmentation to appear faster. Addressing these changes requires an approach that focuses on providing nutrients and herbs, like amla, tulsi and vitamin C for skin repair, saffron for protection and Centella for skin rejuvenation. 3. Is it possible to remove skin pigmentation?   Prevention is always better than the cure. The most effective way to interrupt the cycle of inflamm-aging is through high-potency antioxidant skincare. Some antioxidant scientifically developed herbals also help brighten skin, reducing skin pigmentation. AyurScience Beauty CLARITY range, formulated with specific, clinically-backed botanicals, is designed to neutralise free radicals and help with skin pigmentation, including age spots on the face. The AyurActive™ Signature Complex Every formula features Amla and Tulsi complex, two of Ayurveda’s most revered herbs for skin pigmentation and repair. • Emblica (Amla): Amla superfruit, rich in Vitamin C for skin, containing over 20 times the Vitamin C of oranges. In science studies Amla extract has shown a 63% decrease in melanin production, making it an essential tool to get rid of age spots. • Ayuredi® (Tulsi/Holy Basil): tulsi skincare provides a potent anti-inflammatory agent, in this specialised form. It is proven to reduce face redness and calm skin redness by reducing skin distress. Skin pigmentation is an imbalance which needs support to correct. These specialised herbal and nutritional skincare compounds correct skin redness and facial pigmentation: • WhiteTen™ Complex: A synergistic blend of 10 botanicals, including Centella “K-beauty” sensation and Niacinamide (vitamin B3). While it is not easy to get rid of age spots on the face or elsewhere, this Korean beauty complex specifically targets UV-induced dark age spots, with studies showing a visible reduction in age spot size and intensity when used daily over an 8-week period. • Saffrever® (Saffron): Saffron is a defensive marvel that provides up to 90% free radical reduction, protecting the skin matrix from premature ageing. • Bakuchiol (Sytenol® A): Bakuchiol natural retinol alternative is popular for good reason. Unlike traditional retinol, which can cause scaling and stinging, Bakuchiol is phytochemically stable, meaning it can be used safely during the day to reduce wrinkles and skin dark spots, or skin pigmentation without irritation. 4. Your Ritual for Brightened, Calm and Even Skin: Uneven Skin Tone Products Step 1: Daily Brightening Cleansing Use AyurScience CLARITY Brightening Crème Cleanser morning and night. This rich, soap-free crème cleanser removes impurities and daily grime while infusing the skin with Amla and Sandalwood to improve tone. Step 3: Intense Hydration and Skin Brightening Apply AyurScience CLARITY Radiance Serum to target pigmentation and age spots. This lightweight powerhouse features the WhiteTen™ complex and Hyaluronic acid to deeply hydrate and visibly brighten skin tone. This ultra-hydrating and mild exfoliating serum for hyperpigmentation and serum for age spots is best layered with an antioxidant daily moisturiser, like AyurScience Clarity Even Skin Tone Moisturiser. Post-Holiday Breakouts? Ayurvedic & Plant-Based Remedies for Clear Skin at Any Age - Ayurscience

Post-Holiday Breakouts? Ayurvedic & Plant-Based Remedies for Clear Skin at Any Age

on Jan 30 2026
You’ve planned the perfect night out, but a few days before, you spot the dreaded acne breakout. We’ve all been there. As unwelcomed as it is the best option is not to meddle with the breakout. Instead turn to some natural herbals, natures remedy for reducing inflammation, returning calm and balance to the skin. Natural acne solutions are possible, and if you’re looking for plant-based skincare or effective herbal support for hormonal acne, with the additional benefit of the range being vegan-friendly, you’re in the right place. The secret? Combining ancient Ayurvedic wisdom with modern plant-based science. AyurScience Beauty PURITY collection for acne and breakouts seamlessly bridges ancient Ayurvedic wisdom with modern cosmetic science for blemish free skin. What causes Acne? Acne is a manifestation of body imbalances. Clogged pores and skin inflammation are what appears on the surface, but under the skin is a whole system trying to come into balance.  The scientific causes of acne shows there is a direct disturbance to sebum production. Sebum is the natural, oily lubricant produced by skin sebaceous glands to moisturise, protect, and waterproof the skin. As an essential barrier against skin dryness, unhealthy bacteria and fungi, sebum’s role is to protect, but excess production can lead to oily skin or trigger acne. The sebaceous gland itself is a complex organ, meaning it is directly responds to bodily signals (hormonal and psychological). When acne causes are triggered, they essentially "turn up the heat" on the sebaceous glands, altering sebum quantity and consistency. You may wonder, why do I get acne breakouts on holidays? Holidays are a time for celebration and socialising, but are also often associated with having more sugar, alcohol, and rich foods. These indulgences spike blood sugar and insulin, load liver and gut toxicity, triggering excess oil and inflammation. Add late nights and disrupted sleep, and your skin’s natural balancing cycle suffers, resulting in breakouts. Why am I getting acne breakouts? 1. Hormonal Changes and skin Teenage acne, pregnancy acne or menopausal acne are caused by hormonal disturbances. Various medical conditions or diseases than impact hormone production, metabolism or breakdown also trigger acne and skin breakouts. Using a gentle, balancing acne cleanser along with blemish spot treatment can help balance oil without stripping mature skin. 2. Stress and skin Ever noticed breakouts during stressful times? That’s your body signalling imbalance and a need for gentle support. So why does stress trigger acne? Stress causes a cascade reaction that directly over stimulates our sebaceous glands. Remember, stress doesn’t always feel stressful. Physical stress, like not getting enough rest or overstimulating the body, can also trigger stress hormones and impact the skin 3. Gut Health and skin A disrupted gut microbiome impacts the skin in many ways, including via the skin-gut axis, a communication ‘pathway’ where disruption in one system can impact the other. Digestive disruption, indicated by gut bloating, flatulence or gas build up, are attributed to under functioning digestion in the gut, and can cause toxin buildup (Ama in Ayurveda), leading to skin inflammation, skin dullness and breakouts. Diets high in refined carbohydrates—often seen as dietary triggers post-festive season—raise insulin levels, triggering inflammation and sebum overdrive. Supporting healthy digestion supports skin health. The Ayurvedic Approach Ayurveda sees acne as an imbalance of Pitta (heat/inflammation) and Kapha (oiliness/stagnation). The goal? Restore balance by helping digestive health, anti-inflammatory herbs, stress relief, and targeted herbal skincare. Top Natural Remedies for Acne 1. Turmeric for Skin Calming Turmeric is a skin superhero. Reset, Detox & Rejuvenate: Your After Sun Skin Recovery Guide - Ayurscience

Reset, Detox & Rejuvenate: Your After Sun Skin Recovery Guide

on Jan 05 2026
We all love a great summer and holiday fun, while lovely, it’s damaging your skin. Chronic exposure to solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation triggers a process called photoaging. The intense summer sun generates increased free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS), causing oxidative stress that overwhelms our skin’s natural defences. As a result, collagen degrades, leaving us with wrinkles, sunspots, and overall dullness. By focusing on deep, long-term repair, supported by herbal skincare, we provide essential skin rejuvenating nutrients like vitamin C and antioxidants for skin. For post sun repair we aim to soothe inflammation and bolster our inherent ability for skin regeneration. The Repair Challenge: How to support with post sun skin repair Our skin constantly works to renew itself, completing a full cycle every 28–30 days. However, this natural system often needs substantial support to heal sun damage, especially as we mature. For women navigating later life, such as perimenopause and menopause, skin renewal is acutely challenged because dipping oestrogen levels reduce collagen production and elasticity. Ageing is a natural, beautiful process, however cumulative damage from summer heat, UV, stress, and lifestyle habits can accelerate changes. Accelerating skin damage and aging signs include: 1. Fine Lines & Expression Lines: Lines deepen as the skin loses its natural plumpness, a direct result of UV radiation degrading collagen types I and III. 2. Loss of Elasticity: Skin can feel less firm or "bouncy" because repeated sun exposure severely upregulates the enzymes that break down the dermal structure. 3. Uneven Skin Tone & Pigmentation: Inflammation and free radicals caused by sun exposure releases powerful mediators that stimulate melanin production, causing noticeable dark spots and redness. 4. Dryness & Rough Texture: Sun and heat exposure impairs your skin’s mechanical barrier, resulting in increased skin moisture loss and rough, dehydrated texture. Natural Skin Cleansing: Laying the foundations and stimulating skin repair Daily cleansing from daily grime, makeup, and environmental impurities with gentle creamy cleansers that don’t strip the skin is critical to support skin repair. At the heart of AyurScience Beauty is signature AyurActive™ antioxidant complex, blending two potent restoratives: Amla (Indian Gooseberry) and Tulsi (Holy Basil). • Amla is a known in natural rejuvenating skincare. Rich in natural Vitamin C, providing over 20 times the Vitamin C of oranges, making it a powerhouse that helps reduce oxidative stress, lightening skin, and to brighten complexion. • Tulsi (Ayuredi®) is renowned for its soothing, anti-inflammatory properties, providing documented relief from redness and protecting skin against environmental stress. Choose your cleanser based on your summer concerns: • For Acne or Oily Skin: Try the AyurScience Beauty Purity Foaming Gel Cleanser. It’s enriched with Frankincense and Ginger (purifying Pure-Phen® complex). Soothing skin redness, helping clear blemishes, and promoting wound-healing and skin regeneration. • For Pigmentation or Drier Skin: Opt for the calming AyurScience Beauty Clarity Brightening Crème Cleanser. This formula combines AyurActive™ with Sandalwood (which targets signs of premature ageing and inhibits melanin production to reduce dark spots) and Saffron (Saffiever®), a superb anti-inflammatory antioxidant proven to achieve up to 90% free-radical reduction. Specialised Rejuvenation: Clinical Repair True skincare repair and deep rejuvenation is based on specialised ingredients that stimulate potent dermatological functions, this is the aim of AyurScience Beauty Ayurvedic herbal skincare. ·         What is Bakuchiol? The Natural Retinol Alternative Retinoids are known for addressing photoaging and acne but commonly trigger a "retinoid reaction" involving scaling and stinging, making them poorly tolerated by sensitive skin. Enter Bakuchiol (Syntenol® A), a natural compound derived from the seeds of the babchi plant (Psoralea corylifolia), used historically in both Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Clinical studies confirm that Bakuchiol is a natural alternative to retinol, achieving comparable results in reducing wrinkle surface area and hyperpigmentation. Crucially, Bakuchiol provides  better tolerability. Bakuchiol is photochemically stable, allowing it to be used safely in both day and night routines. Find this powerful antioxidant skincare active in the AyurScience Beauty PURITY Hydrating Lotion. • Collagen stimulating Gotu kola skincare  Gotu kola (Centella asiatica) has been used for centuries in herbal skincare. Revered as the ‘plant of knowledge’, Gotu Kola is a rejuvenating herb that actively boosts collagen production and improves skin firmness, supporting the structural integrity challenged by photoaging. It is so effective, it is often incorporated into popular K-Beauty routines. • Anti-inflammatory skincare: Turmeric (TEGO® Tumerone ORG) Turmeric is well known for its potent anti-inflammatory effects. Modern science shows this specialised Turmeric extracts soothe red, irritated skin and can enhance overall skin tone by up to 56%. Rebalancing Skin Recovery Achieve true skin recovery by combining advanced antioxidant skincare with internal rebalancing support. This approach ensures our lifestyle habits also support our overall vitality, feeding our skin from the inside and out. • Mind the Gut-Skin Axis: Holiday indulgence, especially excessive sugar and alcohol, influences our delicate skin balance, potentially leading to acne flares. Addressing the "gut-skin axis" via healthy nutrition is vital for clarity. • Layer Hydration and Antioxidants: Use lightweight hydrating and antioxidant moisturiser morning and night. Antioxidants for skin (like the Amla and Saffron found in AyurScience Beauty) neutralise free radicals generated by UV and pollution. Ensure hydration from within with good water consumption, especially if taking part in dehydrating activities like partying, sun-time or exercise. • Detoxify from Digital Pollution: Stressors aren't just external. The adaptogen Ashwagandha (in the PURITY range) offers specific defence against artificial blue light emitted from screens, which also contributes to premature ageing. • Gentle Skin Renewal: Support the skin’s natural renewal cycle with regular (and gentle!) exfoliation using herbal exfoliation clay-based masks like AyurScience Beauty. Natural skincare ingredients like Alpha Hydroxy Fruit Acids (AHAs/ACB Fruit Mix) act as de-pigmenting agents and smooth skin texture. By embracing this targeted, holistic repair strategy, you ensure your skin not only recovers from summer sun stress but also protects and builds radiance needed for a healthier complexion at every stage of life.
Help! Why is my skin breaking out with menopause? Managing Menopause Acne - Ayurscience

Help! Why is my skin breaking out with menopause? Managing Menopause Acne

on Oct 30 2025
Menopause is a transitional phase marked by significant hormonal changes. This ‘second phase’ of life officially begins one year after a woman's final menstrual period, however peri-menopause symptoms can start well before then. While symptoms like hot flushes, mood changes, skin and vaginal dryness are common, an unexpected challenge is the onset of adult acne. Managing hormonal breakouts when the skin is simultaneously becoming thinner, drier, and more sensitive presents a unique dermatological challenge.   What is Menopause Acne? Menopausal skin changes are driven by the noticeable decline in female hormones, particularly estrogen. Estrogen typically helps stimulate a more fluid sebaceous gland secretion, offering an "anti-acne" effect during the reproductive years. As estrogen levels drop, testosterone, which is produced by the adrenal glands, is no longer masked and becomes relatively prominent. This rise in testosterone activity stimulates the sebaceous glands to secrete a thicker form of sebum, leading to the appearance of oily skin and an increased tendency toward adult acne. This hormonal acne often manifests as cysts, whiteheads or breakouts, commonly seen as acne around the chin and jawline. Acne rosacea pigmentation may also change or become aggravated with menopause.   Why Does Skin Change at Menopause? The skin is the body’s largest hormonally sensitive organ, and its structure is affected by hormonal changes. Loss of Structural Integrity: The decline in estrogen accelerates collagen loss. Studies show that skin loses about 30% of its collagen during the first five years of menopause. Data suggests that estrogen is a protective factor against facial aging. This loss of collagen leads to skin sagging, loss of elasticity and skin lines. Thinning and Dryness: Lowered estrogen levels severely impair the skin’s ability to retain moisture, leading to dryness and a weakened skin barrier. Reduced dermal blood flow, partially controlled by estrogens, also contributes to the thinning of the epidermis and a slower cell turnover rate, resulting in increased trans-epidermal water loss. Pigmentation Changes: Estrogens temper melanin production. The lack of this regulatory effect can increase melanin synthesis in sun-exposed areas, causing brown "age spots" or hyperpigmentation on the face, hands, neck, arms, or chest.   How to Manage Menopausal Acne: Lifestyle  The primary difficulty in managing menopausal acne is that traditional treatments for younger, oily skin are often too harsh for mature, sensitive skin. Drying out the skin can worsen menopause breakouts. Prioritise Hydration: Because skin loses its ability to hold water, intensive moisturising is essential. Incorporating hydrating moisturisers, serums and cleansers, will support skin hydration. Antioxidant skincare botanicals, like Holy Basil (Tulsi) and Amla, hydrate the skin from within and help retain moisture.  Protect from the Sun: Daily application of a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is crucial to prevent further skin thinning and accelerated collagen depletion caused by UV damage. Nutrition and Internal Balance: Fresh leafy greens contain vitamins and minerals to support healthy skin. Red berries support with bioflavonoids and other nutrients to support UV recovery and skin repair. Fish, nuts and other omega-3 rich foods are vital for reducing inflammation and maintaining skin moisture. Incorporating phytoestrogen-rich foods, like soy products, may help alleviate dryness and improve elasticity by mimicking estrogen. Stress management through mindfulness or yoga and ensuring quality sleep are also important, as stress impacts hormonal balance. Seek Professional Health Support: Your natural health care professional can support with hormonal balance. You may also wish to speak to your doctor about Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).   Skincare for Menopausal Acne  A natural and herbal skincare approach can help provide a gentle skincare routine, whilst avoiding harsh, drying ingredients. Cleansing Strategy: Use a mild cleanser instead of traditional soap, or traditional acne cleansers, which can be too drying. Cleansing morning and night, along with regular use of a detoxing exfoliating cleanser can significantly help unclog blocked pores and ensure better skin hydration. Targeted Herbal Skincare for Acne: Look for antioxidant botanicals, and specialised ingredients with scientific backing to reduce inflammation, promote balance, and support skin renewal: Bakuchiol, a plant-based retinol alternative used in Ayurvedic skincare treatments, offers anti-aging and anti-acne benefits without the irritation or sun sensitivity associated with traditional retinol. Syntenol A is a specialsed form of Backuchiol with clinical studies showing it is just as effective as retinol without the stinging or flaking associated with retinol. Emblica, amla (gooseberry), specialised extract with enhanced antioxidant capabilities, shown to effectively reduce skin irritation and promote skin tone, lightening dark spots. Ayurvedi, specialised Tulsi for skincare, also known as holy basil, is rich in polyphenols. Tulsi is a wholistic well-ageing herbal skincare that protects the skin from environmental and other stresses, helping to restore skin balance. It boosts cell energy to increase cellular renewal, illuminating the skin.    The AyurScience Beauty Purity Range four-step approach is designed for oily, blemished, or problematic skin, perfect for menopausal skin changes: Foaming Gel Cleanser: A daily exfoliating cleanser containing Alpha Hydroxy Fruit Acids (AHAs) acne reduction exfoliation, along with anti-inflammatory botanicals such as Amla, Holy Basil (Tulsi), and Ginger. Use morning and evening. Blemish Spot Treatment: A corrective serum formulated with Bakuchiol, Ginger, and Frankincense that visibly calms redness and irritation, and balances the skin. Hydrating Lotion: Daily lightweight moisturiser that absorbs surface oil and hydrates. It features Bakuchiol (a plant-based retinol alternative) and anti-inflammatory Turmeric. Purifying Mask: A cooling crème clay mask containing Amla, Holy Basil (Tulsi), Turmeric, and Bakuchiol to deeply detoxify and calm the skin. Gentle exfoliation to support for enhanced moisturising benefits when combined as a part of the full skincare ritual.   Why Use Plant-Based Skincare? Plant-based skincare is primarily formulated with plant ingredients like herbs, fruits, seeds and essential oil, rather than synthetic chemicals or animal-derived substances. Plant-based skincare incorporates the best from natural skincare and herbal skincare, created with science innovation and traditional knowledge. Ayurveda, the ancient system of natural healing, emphasises the use of plant-based ingredients to nurture the skin and restore vitality, aligning with the need for gentle care during menopause. Gentle on the skin: Bakuchiol: This plant-based ingredient is a potent antioxidant that offers benefits similar to retinol (improving acne, blemishes, fine lines) but is well-tolerated by troubled or sensitive skin and does not cause sun sensitivity. Anti-Inflammatory Botanicals: Ingredients commonly used include Holy Basil (Tulsi), which helps reduce skin redness and inflammation, and Turmeric, celebrated for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits that soothe irritated skin and inflammatory conditions like acne. Rich in nutrients and skin benefits: For example Pure-phen (frankincense) promotes wound-healing, skin regeneration and helps smooth skin roughness related to acne. Plant-based skincare ingredients are packed with collagen boosting vitamins, skin healing antioxidants, and moisturising essential fatty acids. These nutrients work in synergy to nourish, heal and protect the skin. For example natural vitamin C skincare helps to heal and protect the skin, and amla contains 20x the vitamin C than from oranges.   Menopause is a natural evolution, not a setback — and with the right balance of nourishment, mindfulness, and plant-powered skincare, your skin can continue to glow with vitality through every stage of change.
Achieve Flawless Glass Skin: Your 3-Step Guide - Ayurscience

Achieve Flawless Glass Skin: Your 3-Step Guide

on Oct 01 2025
What is Glass Skin? Healthy, naturally radiant skin, as clear and smooth as polished glass, is a global beauty phenomenon. This "glass skin" trend, originating from K-Beauty, describes a complexion so clear, smooth, and pore-less it appears translucent. It signifies ultra-hydrated, even-toned, texture-free, and refined skin that is luminous and glossy, yet fresh and never oily or greasy. How to achieve glass skin? The goal of glass skin is to achieve a smooth complexion free of bumps, deeply hydrated skin with a cushiony layer beneath the surface, and a springy, plump feel with a dewy look. Achieving this involves a dedicated and consistent skincare approach, focusing on gentle care and layering lightweight, hydrating, and nourishing antioxidant products. How to achieve luminous ‘glass skin’ at any age: Step 1: Deep Cleansing and Gentle Exfoliation The first crucial step is to thoroughly cleanse the skin of impurities, excess oil, and dead skin cells, creating a clear and smooth canvas. Double cleansing, both morning and night, is highly recommended to remove all pore-clogging debris. Gentle exfoliation is also vital for improving texture and radiance without damaging the skin barrier. Daily Cleansing: Choose AyurScience Beauty CLARITY Brightening Crème Cleanser (ideal for pigmented skin, also brightens with saffron, sandalwood, and Gotu Kola for smoother, luminous skin) or AyurScience Beauty PURITY Foaming Gel Cleanser. Both feature the AyurActive™ Amla-Tulsi (Holy Basil) complex, a powerful antioxidant combination where Amla brightens and protects, and Tulsi reduces redness and inflammation. The PURITY Cleanser specifically contains Frankincense and Ginger (Pure-Phen®) which soothe skin redness, improve skin texture, are antibacterial, promote wound-healing, and help rebalance skin microbiota. Exfoliate and Detoxify (regularly & gently): Regular, gentle exfoliation removes dead skin cells and keeps pores clear, enhancing skin texture and radiance. Avoid over-exfoliation to prevent damage, dryness, irritation, redness, and sensitivity. Gently detoxify with Ayurvedic herbs like Tulsi. For Blemish-Prone Skin: Use AyurScience Beauty Purity Purifying Mask with antibacterial herbs like Manjistha and Tulsi to deeply cleanse and rebalance. For Pigmentation or Redness: Opt for AyurScience Beauty Clarity Energising Mask, which features K-beauty WhiteTen™ – a blend of 10 herbal and vitamin-rich ingredients including Vitamin C, Niacinamide (B3), and Ayurvedic botanical skincare to reduce skin pigmentation, like age-spots, face redness, and uneven skin tone. Glass Skin Tip: For additional gentle exfoliation and brightening, incorporate products containing Alpha Hydroxy Fruit Acids (AHAs / ACB Fruit Mix), such as the AyurScience Beauty CLARITY Energising Mask or CLARITY Radiance Serum. These AHAs exfoliate for smoother, brighter skin and act as de-pigmenting agents. Step 2: Brighten & Hydrate Moisturising and replenishing the skin's lipid layer, providing nutrients, antioxidants, and lipids to lock in moisture while allowing the skin to breathe. Serums deliver high concentrations of active ingredients to target brightness, hydration, and anti-ageing. Look for ingredients like Vitamin C for skin and Niacinamide (B3) to diminish dark spots and boost collagen, along with Bakuchiol (plant-based retinol) and Peptides to smooth wrinkles and promote cell renewal. Deep Nurturing: AyurScience Beauty Clarity Radiance Serum offers deep penetration and nurturing, containing WhiteTen™, AHAs, and other plant-based skincare to help lighten and brighten pigmentation, reduce redness, and provide calm. Targeted Treatments: The AyurScience Beauty PURITY Blemish Spot Treatment includes Amla, Tulsi, Bakuchiol, Ginger, and Frankincense to calm blemishes, reduce redness, and decongest skin. The AyurScience Beauty PURITY Hydrating Lotion features Bakuchiol as a natural retinol alternative to improve acne, blemishes, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation without irritation. Step 3: Nourish & Protect Seal in the benefits with skin-promoting, antioxidant-powered moisturisers to keep skin plump and supple. Avoid mattifying finishes to maintain the glossy glass skin look. AyurScience Moisturisers: AyurScience Beauty PURITY Hydrating Lotion features Bakuchiol as a natural retinol alternative for improving acne, blemishes, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation without irritation. It's a lightweight, fast-absorbing option with Amla, Tulsi, Bakuchiol, Turmeric, Frankincense, Ginger, and Manjistha for hydration, soothing, and barrier support. AyurScience Beauty CLARITY Even Skin Tone Moisturiser provides Amla, Tulsi, Saffron, Manjistha, Gotu Kola, and Sandalwood to even skin tone, strengthen the skin's surface, and deliver a radiant complexion. Lifestyle Tips for Flawless Glass Skin Healthy living is the best promoter of glass skin. Support your gut-skin axis, reduce inflammation, and hydrate from within. Skin Health from Within: Start your day with lemon juice in water, eat healthy, fresh foods while avoiding processed foods, take care of your digestion and gut health, and address any underlying inflammation. Sun Protection: Use sun protection daily and support skin recovery with antioxidant skincare. Look for antioxidants: AyurScience Beauty incorporates numerous antioxidant-rich ingredients like Amla, Tulsi, Saffron, and Turmeric that help defend against free radical exposure. Ashwagandha specifically may provide help against artificial blue light from screens, which is also important for maintaining skin health. Hydrate Throughout the Day: Refresh your skin with a facial mist to maintain a glassy look, and drink water! Beauty Sleep: Prioritise adequate rest and sleep. Regular Exfoliation Masks: Incorporate masks more frequently (even an extra session a week) to deeply hydrate and nourish the skin. Avoid Inflammatory Foods: Minimise high-sugar items, refined carbohydrates, and potentially excessive dairy or salty snacks, which can trigger inflammation, breakouts, and dullness. By combining these consistent skincare steps with efficacious products and a healthy lifestyle, you can embark on a journey towards achieving a radiant complexion that truly reflects the essence of "glass skin".
Your Guide to Natural Pain Relief for Movement - Ayurscience

Your Guide to Natural Pain Relief for Movement

on Sep 01 2025
How to ease stiffness and inflammation naturally and keep doing what you love! If you haven’t exercised in a while you’d know the feeling of body ache and pains. It’s natural to feel aches, stiffness and pain after injury, with aging or after periods of inactivity. But pain doesn’t have to be your new normal. Movement and exercise are critical for our wellbeing (and help keep us younger). Whether it's walking, gardening, dancing or doing the sport you love, it is important to keep moving. Understandably joint stiffness, muscle tension, and mild pain makes movement more difficult, and less enjoyable. While pharmaceutical options may be needed, natural help for pain management may also be helpful to incorporate, providing support and working with the body to reduce inflammation and improve mobility. What causes pain in the joints? Painful joints are usually associated with inflammation. There are two types of joint pain and swelling. 1.      Acute joint pain and swelling comes on quickly and doesn’t last for too long. This may be a result of an injury or infection. It is important to speak to your healthcare professional about any sudden pain or swelling so it is treated effectively. 2.      Chronic joint and muscle pain usually comes on gradually and has some underlying cause such as a chronic inflammatory condition, or due to long-standing structural damage, such as osteoarthritis. The elbows, wrists, shoulders, the base of the spine, hand joints, hips, knees and ankles are the most commonly affected joints for pain and swelling. Joint discomfort is linked to chronic low-grade inflammation, which becomes more common with age. According to Harvard Health Publishing, inflammation is a key contributor to joint pain, especially in conditions like osteoarthritis. Factors such as inactivity, stress, repetitive strain, and poor nutrition can worsen this inflammation, leading to stiffness and reduced mobility. This guide explores how Ayurvedic herbal medicine, self-massage, gentle movement, and digestive support can help you move more freely and feel more like yourself again. Remember to also speak to your healthcare provider, including your naturopath or Ayurvedic practitioner, on what is best for you. Why Use Natural Joint Pain Relief? Natural approaches to pain relief generally don’t just treat the symptoms. The aim is to address the underlying contributors and triggers to help body aches and pains. Working with the body to balance inflammation, poor circulation and address imbalance. Using lifestyle, healthy dietary choices, herbal supplements and physical therapies, like massage and yoga, can significantly improve joint health and reduce inflammatory load. 1.      Massage: stimulating circulation and relieving tension Releasing tense muscles not only feels good but also allows for circulation and lymphatic drainage. Healthy circulation allows for nutrients to get to damaged joint areas, and also allows for toxin removal, supporting the body’s natural healing process. Professional regular massage and physical therapies is something that can help relieve joint pain. Self-massage can also be easily incorporated as a daily practice. ‘Abhyanga’, a warm oil self-massage is a powerful tool used in Ayurveda traditional medicine practice.  Translating to “move different”, this daily practice of self-massage supports circulation, reduces inflammation, and calms the nervous system. Abhyanga is also called snehana, which means “to nurture or love.” Traditionally Abhyanga massage is done with herbal infused oils which are thought to penetrate the skin, providing relief to joints and muscles. Using a warming herbal oil like AyurScience De-Ache, infused with traditional herbs such as turmeric and ashwagandha, along with essential oils to stimulate circulation, like cedarwood,  help relieve muscle tension and support joint flexibility. 2.      Move Gently and Consistently Pain often discourages movement, but gentle activity is essential for keeping joint health, supporting cardiovascular health and wellbeing. The Mayo Clinic recommends regular exercise, suggesting range of motion exercises along with aerobic exercise, depending on individual needs. Exercise to consider include walking, swimming, yoga, Tai Chi and stretching. Here are some suggestions to try: ·         Gentle yoga: Poses like cat-cow, seated twists, and supported bridge help lubricate joints and ease tension. ·         Walking: A 20-minute walk boosts circulation and mood. ·         Breathwork: Deep breathing calms the nervous system and reduces pain perception. 3.      Natural Supplements to Manage Inflammation Natural herbal supplements can help reduce inflammation and support joint health. Curcumin found in turmeric has been shown to inhibit inflammatory enzymes. Boswellia serrata, also known as Indian frankincense, helps reduce swelling and improve joint function. Ayurvedic herbs such as ginger, galangal, and ashwagandha are traditionally used to support muscle recovery and reduce inflammation. AyurScience Re-moov complex combines these anti-inflammatory herbs traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine to support joint comfort and help reduce mild joint pain. 4.      Support with anti-inflammatory diet One of the best ways to fight inflammation can be in what you eat, confirms Havard Health, with an anti-inflammatory diet. What does an anti-inflammatory diet do? Simply it helps modulate inflammation by reducing consumption of foods that trigger inflammation and also eating foods that reduce pro-inflammatory agents from being produced. Processed and refined foods trigger and contribute to inflammation, while vegetables and fresh foods decrease it. A more vegetarian diet, with oily fish, is good to support healthy inflammation management.   What foods to avoid for inflammation? ·         Refined carbohydrates e.g. sweet foods like white bread, cake, confectionary, sugar ·         Soft drinks and sugar beverages ·         Fatty and fried foods such as chips, margarine ·         Red meat ·         Processed meats (such as salami, hot dogs etc.)   What foods have anti-inflammatory benefit? ·         Healthy omega-3 oils including fatty fish such as wild harvested salmon, mackerel, tuna and sardines. ·         Green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, kale, and rocket ·         Nuts like almonds and walnuts. ·         Fruits including pineapple and papaya. ·         Opt for healthy oils such as olive oil. ·         Incorporate anti-inflammatory spices and herbs into your diet: turmeric, ginger and galangal, also used in Ayurveda and Western herbal medicine, can be used in cooking and meals to help moderate inflammation. In Ayurveda the gut is central to health. Ayurveda notes that when digestion is weak, toxins (ama) accumulate, leading to inflammation and even joint stiffness. Pain doesn’t have to limit your lifestyle. With a few simple, natural practices, you can reduce inflammation, restore mobility, and enjoy the freedom of movement—just in time for spring. Start small: a short walk, a warm oil massage, or a turmeric tea can make a meaningful difference. Over time, these habits build resilience, vitality, and a deeper connection to your body’s natural rhythm.

Acne: Unlock your Gut-Skin Axis for Glowing Skin Health - Ayurscience

Acne: Unlock your Gut-Skin Axis for Glowing Skin Health

on Mar 19 2025
Clear, healthier skin is best with a whole-body approach. This means taking care of your body inside and out, including the Gut-Skin axis. The Gut-Skin axis is an important pathway to support skin health and overall wellness. What is acne? Acne is a common inflammatory skin disorder that can appear at any stage of life. Acne vulgaris is the most common form of acne. Acne affects up to 95% of adolescents, making it the most common skin disorder in the Western world. Clogged pores lead to acne breakouts, triggered by several factors. For example, hormonal changes during adolescence and other life stages, causing acne flare-ups. Stress, diet, and gut health also play big roles.  What causes acne? Acne develops due to many combined factors. Blocked and inflamed skin pores that lead to acne are due to one or more of these three factors: Excess or high production of sebum oil (produced to keep our skin moisturised) in skin pores. Blocking of skin pores with the buildup of dead skin cells. Disruption of the skin microbiome, leading to unhealthy bacterial growth in the pore. Factors that contribute to the causes of acne include: Disrupted gut microbiome (dysbiosis) Hormonal fluctuations Poor digestion Diet: some foods, such as sugary or processed foods, can aggravate acne Stress Skin irritation: This includes irritation caused by pressure from clothing or sports equipment, like helmets, tight clothes, or backpacks. Squeezing or picking blemishes and harsh skin scrubbing also cause irritation. Environmental irritants include pollution and high humidity. An imbalance in the digestive system can cause more inflammation, lower nutrient absorption, and harm microbiome health. These issues can lead to breakouts and acne prone skin. The Gut-Skin Connection: Why It Matters The gut-skin axis is the relationship between our digestive health and our skin. Our gut is home to trillions of bacteria. The healthy bacteria, probiotics, crucial for digestion, immunity, and inflammation control, forming a healthy part of our microbiome. An imbalanced microbiome, or dysbiosis, can harm our health. It affects immune function, changes hormone balance, and causes inflammation. These issues are connected to acne and other skin problems. [i] Addressing gut health is a foundational step toward clearer, healthier skin as confirmed by another study published in 2024. The authors state, “Although the gastrointestinal microbiome is only one of many factors contributing to acne, in the case of acne vulgaris, it has an undeniable impact on skin conditions.” A significant link between gut dysregulation and acne, particularly for people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or constipation, has also been shown in other research. According to Ayurvedic medicine and a natural health perspective, poor digestion is a sign of compromised gut health. Decreased nutrient absorption, poorly digested food and other factors are seen as leading to inflammation and immunity disruptions which manifest as irritated, inflamed, or acne-prone skin. Signs Your Gut Health May Be Affecting Your Skin If you struggle with ongoing acne, skin redness, or skin inflammation, you may want to look at your gut health. Common signs of poor gut health include: Bloating Heartburn Constipation or diarrhea Excessive gas Food intolerances How to Support Clearer Skin Naturally.   1. Support your Gut Health ·       Promote a healthy microbiome: A balanced gut microbiome thrives on probiotic and prebiotic-rich foods. ·       Fermented foods – naturally rich in probiotics include fermented foods like yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut, and kefir in your daily diet. This helps to support the diversity of probiotics for a healthier microbiome. ·       Fibre-rich foods: Fibre provides nourishment for probiotics – often termed prebiotics. Prebiotic rich foods to add to consider for your diet include vegetables such as fennel and beetroot, legumes, fruits such as peach, watermelon, pomegranate and nectarines, wholegrain cereals such as brown rice and barley. Slowly introduce higher fibre foods into your diet to minimise the build-up of gas. ·       Support digestion: Try digestive remedies like black salt, asafoetida, cumin, or ajwain in cooking to aid digestion. Many cultures use these natural remedies to reduce gas and ease indigestion. AyurScience Gasnix helps to reduce bloating and gas build up, and is low FODMAP certified, suitable for people with medically diagnosed irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). 2. Reduce Inflammatory Foods Refined sugar, dairy, and processed foods can trigger gut and skin inflammation. Reducing these foods and adding nutrient-rich options can lower breakouts and improve your skin. 3. Stay Hydrated & Detoxify Staying hydrated is crucial. It helps detoxify the skin, clear blemishes, and keep skin rejuvenated. Avoid caffeinated drinks and opt for plain or lemon-infused water. Herbal teas like ginger or peppermint are also a great option for hydration. 4. Manage your stress Manage your stress with mindfulness. Try practices like meditation, yoga, and other support. Adaptogenic herbs like Ashwagandha and Tulsi (Holy Basil) may also help support with stress management.  You may like to try this meditation skin-care routine. 5. Get support for hormonal imbalances Hormonal imbalances, particularly those linked to imbalances in estrogen and androgens, can trigger acne. Support yourself with a healthy diet, improved digestion and stress management. Talk to your healthcare practitioner for more support. Hormonal imbalances often need special management. Naturopaths or Ayurvedic practitioners support with a natural and holistic approach. 6. Utilise The Power of Bakuchiol: Nature’s Retinol Supporting your skin from within is important. Also, picking the right skincare can really help. One plant-based powerhouse that’s making waves in the skincare world is Bakuchiol. What is Bakuchiol? Bakuchiol is a natural extract derived from the Psoralea corylifolia plant. It has been hailed as a gentle alternative to retinol, offering similar skin-renewing benefits without irritation. Bakuchiol soothes the skin, so it’s great for all types. This includes sensitive and acne-prone skin. Try AyurScience Beauty Purity Blemish Spot Treatment enriched with bakuchiol and other anti-inflammatory herbal extracts to manage acne spots.   Benefits of Bakuchiol for Clearer, Healthier Skin Boosts Skin Cell Renewal: It speeds up how fast cells turn over. This helps reduce breakouts and evens out skin tone. Anti-Inflammatory & Antioxidant: Helps calm redness and fight oxidative stress. Boosts Collagen Production: Improves skin elasticity and reduces fine lines. Non-Irritating & Gentle: Ideal for those who cannot tolerate retinol. Minimising acne triggers is critical for clear, healthy skin. A holistic approach supports the body inside and out to help minimise triggers. Focus on gut health, inflammation, hormonal and stress balance to support your overall health and glow. [i] Chen YW, Wu CY, Chen YJ. What is Ayurvedic Medicine and Its Associated Health Benefits?

on Jan 20 2025
Ayurvedic medicine, also known as Ayurveda, is a traditional holistic healing system that originated in India thousands of years ago. It is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit, as well as the balance between the individual and their environment. Ayurveda encompasses a comprehensive approach to health, including lifestyle practices, dietary recommendations, herbal remedies, detoxification techniques, and mind-body therapies. Here are some of the health benefits associated with Ayurvedic medicine: Personalised approach: Ayurveda recognises that each person is unique, with their own individual constitution or dosha (Vata, Pitta, or Kapha). Treatment plans are personalised according to a person’s dosha, lifestyle, and specific health needs, leading to tailored and effective interventions. Promotion of balance and harmony: Ayurvedic treatments aim to restore balance and harmony within the body by addressing the root cause of illness rather than just alleviating symptoms. This holistic approach helps to achieve long-term health benefits and overall well-being. Natural remedies: Ayurvedic medicine primarily utilises natural ingredients such as herbs, spices, minerals, and plant-based oils, which are believed to be gentle on the body and have fewer side effects compared to synthetic medications. These natural remedies often support the body’s innate healing mechanisms. Mindful Daily Skincare – A Beauty Ritual for Embracing Self-Care - Ayurscience

Mindful Daily Skincare – A Beauty Ritual for Embracing Self-Care

on Jan 20 2025
Nurturing and loving ourselves with simple daily acts are a perfect way to cherish ourselves and find some solace in a busy life.  Tending to our skincare is more than just cleansing and moisturising our skin—it’s about honouring ourselves through daily rituals that bring balance and peace. Finding solace in these moments of mindfulness can transform the way we support our beauty and wellbeing, and how we see ourselves, and the example we set to others including our family, friends, and children.  A popular traditional lifestyle medicine, Ayurveda, encompasses a holistic approach to health, well-being and beauty, focusing on mind-body-spirit balance.  Physical movement, such as yoga, nature connection and healthy food are important aspects contributing to wellbeing. Caring for the skin is deeply tied to caring for the spirit and self.  With just a few minutes a day you can create a special skincare routine that not only rejuvenates your skin and beauty, but also reconnects you to your inner calm. Step 1: Skin Cleanse – Washing Away Worries and Stress Begin and end your day by gently cleansing your face removing make-up and environmental toxin build up. As you cleanse, take slow, deep breaths, allowing the sensation of release to bring a sense of calm to your mind.  Use natural skincare, a formula rich in antioxidant Ayurvedic botanicals such as Amla, Tulsi, Sandalwood, and Saffron, which are known to help brighten and purify skin, as well as helps to prepare your skin ready for moisture.  Step 2: Rejuvenate – Renewing Skin Radiance and Inner Glow  Next, awaken your skin with a rejuvenating serum rich in Ayurveda botanicals Amla, Tulsi, Gotu kola, and Saffron. As you gently press the serum into your skin, pause to appreciate this moment of renewal. Focus on the present, feeling the nourishment flow through your fingertips and into your skin.  These healing herbs renew and restore, helping smooth fine lines and promote a radiant glow.  Step 3: Blemish Treatment – Gentle Acceptance of ImperfectionsFor those moments when blemishes arise, apply targeted spot treatment formulated with Amla, Tulsi, Bakuchiol, Ginger, and Neem. These powerful botanicals work in harmony to soothe redness, calm irritation, and promote healing without disrupting your skin’s natural balance. Take a mindful moment to apply the blemish treatment, acknowledging this step as part of your body’s natural journey.  Step 4: Moisturise and Skin Hydration – Cherish Your Skin with Deep Nourishment  Complete your daily ritual with deep nourishment for your skin by gently applying a luxurious moisturiser, blended with Amla, Tulsi, Saffron, and Manjistha. As you apply the antioxidant moisturiser, take a moment to honour yourself—this is an act of love, a grounding pause in your day to cherish the gift of your own being.  This step provides deep skin hydration, evens skin tone, and strengthens your skin, leaving skin supple and luminous.  Weekly Ritual: A Deeper Pause Through the week treat yourself to a luxurious face mask and deeper relaxation. One to three times per week use a naturally scented mask, formulated with antioxidants and revitalising Ayurvedic herbs Amla, Tulsi, Sandalwood, Turmeric, and Saffron to help re-energise skin. Combine with a bath, meditation or soft music for deeper relaxation and rejuvenation. As you let the mask settle, close your eyes, focus on your breath, and enjoy the stillness. A deeper pause through the week helps to refresh both body and spirit, helping to bring inner calm.   Ayurveda Inspired Skincare:  Beauty is a reflection of harmony and inner calm. Holistic Festivities: Balancing Mind, Body, and Spirit During the Holidays - Ayurscience

Holistic Festivities: Balancing Mind, Body, and Spirit During the Holidays

on Jan 20 2025
The festive season is a beautiful time of joy, connection, and shared celebration. But with it often comes a whirlwind of activity that can leave us feeling stretched, scattered and stressed. Between organising gatherings, shopping, managing school performances and balancing work commitment it is easy to lose touch with our own needs. In the midst of this whirlwind, the greatest gift we can offer ourselves is some time for self-care and reflection, gently nurturing our mind, body, and spirit. This also helps us stay grounded and centred, despite the chaotic challenges – fun and not so fun – that can arise during emotionally charged festivities. Ayurveda, known as the “science of life,” is a holistic system of health that has been practised for over 5,000 years. Rooted in principles of balance, self-care, and alignment with nature, Ayurveda offers gentle, effective ways to maintain harmony within ourselves and with the world around us. Through simple, nourishing rituals, we can carry a sense of calm and self-love through even the busiest holiday moments. Embrace Mindful Eating With festive treats everywhere, it’s easy to overindulge, leaving us feeling heavy and sluggish. Ayurveda encourages mindful eating, a practice that helps us slow down and savour each bite, supporting both digestion and emotional balance. Small, supportive practices like sipping warm ginger tea or adding spices like fennel and cumin to meals help strengthen the agni (digestive fire) and keep energy flowing for healthy digestion and reducing bloating. When we listen to our body’s cues, eating becomes a nourishing act that leaves us feeling energised, getting the most out of our foods. Low-FODMAP friendly options can also help support people with IBS.  Find Stillness in Movement Movement, especially through practices like yoga, is a powerful way to create space for ourselves amid holiday busyness (aka. busi-ness). Ayurveda teaches that gentle movement helps balance the vata dosha—the energy associated with change and movement—keeping us centred and grounded. A few gentle stretches, along with conscious deep breaths, can release tension and bring peace through your day. Poses like a gentle Child’s Pose or Cat-Cow stretch help release tight muscles and mind, especially after a busy day. For deeper relaxation, try starting your day with a morning yoga routine, this video can provide some guidance. A warming Ayurvedic massage oil like AyurScience De-Ache can help support circulation and warm tired and tense muscles, provide even more comfort. Cultivate Calm with Meditation Moments of stillness are precious and essential, especially during the holiday rush. Ayurveda emphasises alignment with nature’s rhythms and mindfulness practices to bring calm and clarity. Meditation, even in brief moments, is a simple way to restore our inner peace. Consider taking time through the day to breathe deeply and connect to the people and your surroundings. “Bed-itation”—taking five to ten minutes to meditate upon waking or before sleep is a great way to start and finish the day. These quiet moments help rebalance the mind, providing inner peace for our interactions through the day, and in ourselves. Prioritise Restful Sleep Restful sleep is essential to holistic health and our ability to manage holiday stress with ease. Sleep is an important aspect for well-being, critical for mental clarity, immune health, and physical health and beauty. By creating a simple evening routine—such as lighting a candle, having a warm bath, using relaxing essential oils like lavender oil, and incorporating journaling – provides space to reflect and release the day’s stresses. These simple routines provide a gentle invitation to your mind and body to unwind and ready for sleep. Aim for a regular sleep time to establish a schedule that your body remembers, allowing you to fall asleep more easily to wake up refreshed and ready to embrace each day fully. The Power of Self-Love As we navigate the holiday season, remember that self-care is not indulgent—it’s essential for the love we hold for others is a reflection of the love we hold for ourselves. Recognise and honour that we are each deserving of the same sacred care and attention we offer others. These small moments of self-care nourish our soul —whether it’s a favourite healthy meal, a swim in the ocean or lake, a favourite song, a rose-scented beauty cream or a warming massage. Feeling good within encourages our balance and mindfulness with our interactions becoming more harmonious and aligned to our truth, creating a ripple effect of balance and kindness. Create the meaningful gift of time you take for yourself — enriching the life of those you cherish along with your own. Whether it be a mindful pause, an evening ritual, a beauty treatment or simple movement, these small acts of self-care will keep you balanced—mind, body, and spirit—so you can enjoy this special season with an open heart and a peaceful mind. Radiate Wellbeing with the Ancient Wisdom of Ayurveda - Ayurscience

Radiate Wellbeing with the Ancient Wisdom of Ayurveda

on Jan 20 2025
With every beginning, whether it be a new day, new year or new milestone, we have the power to take action and commitment to sustainable wellness. Modern life brings many challenges, can the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda—the “science of life”—provide us with some simple principles to guide us toward balance, vitality, and thriving?  The principles of ‘Science of Life’ enable us to create lasting habits that nurture mind, body, and spirit. 1. Begin with Clear Intentions Ayurveda emphasises the importance of clarity and purpose. You may have experienced this through yoga, mindfulness, or meditation practices—all integral to Ayurvedic teachings. Reflect on what wellness means to you, and what needs to come into balance. Is it about physical movement, mental calm, or emotional? Identify what is most valuable to you and set intentions that align with achievable actions. For instance, you might aim to eat more mindfully, introduce a short self-care ritual, or dedicate time to a 10-minute yoga routine. Simple mantras like, “I intend to practice mindful movement, taking each step with purpose for my healing,” can ground your efforts and provide focus. Aligning your intentions with purposeful actions fosters a foundation for sustainable change. 2. Embrace Mindfulness Mindful observation and adapting to life’s rhythms is a key teaching of Ayurveda. Noticing how we are, what shifts our energy, digestion, mood and sleep will help us address imbalances. Perhaps it is a food we need to avoid, or a situation we need to address.  Setting an intention to be mindful in our interactions, decisions and actions ensure we can adjust accordingly.  Mindful adaptability ensures that your journey remains flexible and responsive to your needs. Simple mindfulness exercises can include a mindful skincare routine, for example, providing a moment of peace while addressing your skin’s needs with Ayurvedic herbals.  3. Establish a Daily Routine (Dinacharya) A structured daily routine is referred to as Dinacharya in Ayurveda. The intentional practices are to establish harmony and balance from the start of the day through to the end.  You may already have your own routines, simply incorporate what resonates with you.  Morning rituals: Warm water with lemon is a great way to start the day and gently stimulate digestion. Traditional Ayurveda practices also incorporate cleanse and energising practices such as tongue scraping, and nasal clearing with salted water.  Mindful meals: Prioritise fresh, seasonal foods and undistracted eating to support digestion and vitality. Evening wind-down: Prepare for restorative sleep with calming practices like journaling, meditation, or light yoga. Lighting a candle and focusing on the flame for a few minutes provides a simple meditation practice. Noting three things you are grateful for in your day can be a great way to reflect and appreciate the positives in our life.  4. Daily Movement Movement is critical for good health and is also a great way to relieve stress and ensure balanced mood. Set intention for daily movement, such as a walk in nature, or yoga sequence, ideal for starting your day or resetting after a busy moment. Here are some essential tips for joint health and mobility that are easy to incorporate into daily routines: Botanicals to help joint and muscle health Massage and spa therapy Yoga and stretching Anti-inflammatory diet and foods 5. Incorporate Breathwork for Calm Breathwork is a powerful Ayurvedic practice for balancing the mind and body, incorporated into other Ayurveda practices like yoga. A few minutes daily can foster relaxation and resilience. Breathwork can also be easily done in any setting, even a stressful work meeting.  Try out some of these simple practices. Alternative nostril breathing is a great one for the start and end of the day, while box breathing can be used before a meeting to focus the mind.  Box Breathing: Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4. Diaphragmatic Breathing: Focus on deep belly breaths to calm your nervous system. 4-7-8 Breathing: Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, and exhale for 8. Alternate Nostril Breathing: Balance your energy and centre your mind. Breath by breath, you will create clarity and a sense of inner calm. It is like yoga for your mind.  6. Ayurvedic Botanicals for Your Health  Ayurveda time-tested botanicals offer targeted support for managing specific health concerns, helping you maintain wellness throughout the year. Digestive Health: Many traditional medicines recognise digestion as the foundation to health. Good digestion means you get the most out of the foods to support energy and wellbeing. Asafoetida is a traditional botanical used in Ayurveda and other cultures, for promoting digestion and alleviating bloating or discomfort. Incorporate it into meals that are prone to cause gas build up (like lentil dishes….). Your stomach and loved ones will thank you too. Many Ayurvedic botanicals are used as foods, and also as medicines. For example; AyurScience Gasnix is based on a traditional Ayurvedic formula to help reduce bloating, flatulence and gas. It can also be used as a natural remedy to reduce symptoms occurring of medically diagnosed IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). Reduce Inflammation: Inflammation impacts health in many ways and is linked to many health conditions. Ayurvedic herbal medicines like turmeric and ginger are celebrated due to natural anti-inflammatory properties. Try using turmeric in your cooking, it is great in a curry. To support joint health and reduce inflammation consider a supplement combined with Ayurvedic botanicals, like AyurScience Re-Moov, Withania (Ashwagandha) and Boswellia, helping to address various stages of inflammation and pain.  Healthy Breathing: A reoccurring chesty cough, or irritating dry cough, is a common sign of respiratory issues and can impact wellbeing, breathing and sleep. Be sure to see your healthcare professional to address the underlying cause. Ginger, Tulsi (Holy Basil), Adhatoda (Malabar Nut) are excellent herbals for coughs and supporting respiratory health. Using a natural remedy for chesty coughs or dry coughs may help address early symptoms before the cough develops further. 7. Plant-based Nourishment  Fresh and seasonal foods, with an emphasis on plant-based is recommended in Ayurveda.  Aim for plant-based nourishment, including nuts and seeds, green leafy vegetables, in season fruits and vegetables. Designating a meat-free day at least two nights a week is a great way to start.  Include a variety of colours and textures to ensure nutritional harmony. Stay hydrated with water or herbal teas to maintain energy and clarity. 8. Celebrate Your Progress Ayurveda reminds us that wellness is a journey. You may wish to reflect on your achievements with gratitude and adjust your practices to align with evolving needs. Trust the process, knowing that balance is dynamic and an ever-changing journey to wellbeing, with intention to stay well.  Together, lets embrace renewal and unlock the secrets of Ayurveda for a harmonious, thriving life enriched by natural medicine, herbal healthcare products, and Ayurvedic herbal solutions.
