Skin Pigmentation – Impact on skin ageing and what you can do about it

Our skin often tells a story, of the joys and lows, but also of the months just passed. Seasons take their toll on our skin. For example, in summer the intense ultraviolet (UV) exposure, intense heat, outdoor activities and partying leaves a legacy of photoageing, inflammation, and uneven pigmentation.

In the world of modern dermatology and ancient Ayurveda, this isn't just "sun damage", it is the visible result of a process known as inflamm-aging – inflammation that leads to skin-ageing, and skin pigmentation.

At AyurScience, an Australian brand founded by second-generation pharmacists, we bridge the gap between 5,000 years of herbal tradition and science precision. By understanding inflamm-aging, we can move beyond quick fixes to a routine that supports repair and rebalances the skin.

1. What is Inflamm-aging, and what causes skin pigmentation?

Inflamm-aging is a term used to describe the link between chronic, low-grade inflammation and the acceleration of the ageing process. Exposure to toxins, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, environmental pollutants and even skin products that irritate the skin creates a rush of reactive oxygen species (ROS), damaging skin cells.

The cause of skin pigmentation is from this oxidative stress that triggers a cascade of pro-inflammatory signalling proteins which overstimulate pigment-producing skin cells (melanocytes). The result is an irregular distribution of melanin, resulting in darkening age spots on the hands and face, pigmentation on the face, redness in the skin, and uneven skin-tone.

Summer is usually a major contributor to skin pigmentation on the face, and other exposed areas, like the hands,  given the heightened exposure to UV damage.

2. Hormones and Menopause Skin

During menopause skin is impacted with a dip in estrogen levels reducing the skin’s natural collagen production and structural elasticity. This hormonal transition often makes the skin more prone to "hot flush redness" and sensitivity.

The weakened skin matrix causes ageing fine lines and skin pigmentation to appear faster. Addressing these changes requires an approach that focuses on providing nutrients and herbs, like amla, tulsi and vitamin C for skin repair, saffron for protection and Centella for skin rejuvenation.

3. Is it possible to remove skin pigmentation?

Prevention is always better than the cure. The most effective way to interrupt the cycle of inflamm-aging is through high-potency antioxidant skincare. Some antioxidant scientifically developed herbals also help brighten skin, reducing skin pigmentation. AyurScience Beauty CLARITY range, formulated with specific, clinically-backed botanicals, is designed to neutralise free radicals and help with skin pigmentation, including age spots on the face.

The AyurActive™ Signature Complex

Every formula features Amla and Tulsi complex, two of Ayurveda’s most revered herbs for skin pigmentation and repair.

• Emblica (Amla): Amla superfruit, rich in Vitamin C for skin, containing over 20 times the Vitamin C of oranges. In science studies Amla extract has shown a 63% decrease in melanin production, making it an essential tool to get rid of age spots.

• Ayuredi® (Tulsi/Holy Basil): tulsi skincare provides a potent anti-inflammatory agent, in this specialised form. It is proven to reduce face redness and calm skin redness by reducing skin distress.

Skin pigmentation is an imbalance which needs support to correct. These specialised herbal and nutritional skincare compounds correct skin redness and facial pigmentation:

• WhiteTen™ Complex: A synergistic blend of 10 botanicals, including Centella “K-beauty” sensation and Niacinamide (vitamin B3). While it is not easy to get rid of age spots on the face or elsewhere, this Korean beauty complex specifically targets UV-induced dark age spots, with studies showing a visible reduction in age spot size and intensity when used daily over an 8-week period.

• Saffrever® (Saffron): Saffron is a defensive marvel that provides up to 90% free radical reduction, protecting the skin matrix from premature ageing.

• Bakuchiol (Sytenol® A): Bakuchiol natural retinol alternative is popular for good reason. Unlike traditional retinol, which can cause scaling and stinging, Bakuchiol is phytochemically stable, meaning it can be used safely during the day to reduce wrinkles and skin dark spots, or skin pigmentation without irritation.

4. Your Ritual for Brightened, Calm and Even Skin: Uneven Skin Tone Products

Step 1: Daily Brightening Cleansing

Use AyurScience CLARITY Brightening Crème Cleanser morning and night. This rich, soap-free crème cleanser removes impurities and daily grime while infusing the skin with Amla and Sandalwood to improve tone.

Step 2: Weekly Detox and Skin Resurface

Apply AyurScience CLARITY Energising Mask 2-3 times per week. Alpha Hydroxy Fruit Acids (AHAs)  provide deep and gentle exfoliation. Kaolin Clay gently cools and draws up toxins trapped deep within the skin. This step is vital for shedding the dead, pigmented cells of the top layer to reveal a smoother, fresher complexion.

Step 3: Intense Hydration and Skin Brightening

Apply AyurScience CLARITY Radiance Serum to target pigmentation and age spots. This lightweight powerhouse features the WhiteTen™ complex and Hyaluronic acid to deeply hydrate and visibly brighten skin tone. This ultra-hydrating and mild exfoliating serum for hyperpigmentation and serum for age spots is best layered with an antioxidant daily moisturiser, like AyurScience Clarity Even Skin Tone Moisturiser.

Step 4: Rejuvenating Antioxidant Moisturiser

Seal your routine with AyurScience CLARITY Even Skin Tone Moisturiser. Antioxidants for skin to repair the surface barrier and restores natural balance. Amla and tulsi, boosted to maintain softness and calm skin irritation. Brightening and lightening age spots on the face with regular use.

Skin Clarity, Skin Confidence

Healthy skin is a reflection of internal balance. By using antioxidant-rich herbal skincare to contain inflammation at its root, we can achieve a complexion that is not just "glass-skin" on the surface, but resilient and radiant from within.
