Understanding Ayurveda felt like meeting a framework for life and health that had been quietly working in the background of everything I do as a naturopath, medical herbalist and human.
A holistic approach to the human experience.
Body. Mind. Consciousness. And, of course, the skin we’re living in.
Our skin accompanies us through every chapter of life. At times, what we’re experiencing can feel visible before we’re ready to share it. A change in complexion. A little more dryness. A reflection that feels unfamiliar.
I understand how personal that can feel.
AyurScience brings ancient ritual and a reverence for nature into beautifully considered skincare. Each formula honours Ayurvedic wisdom and botanical traditions, supported by modern science and innovation in skincare formulation.
As a herbalist, I am fascinated by the plants. As a human, I am equally interested in how we make space to care for ourselves.
Ayurveda: the wisdom of daily care
Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest systems of traditional medicine, rooted in the Indian subcontinent, with a history extending back thousands of years.
The word itself comes from Sanskrit: Ayur meaning life, and Veda meaning wisdom or knowledge. The science of life.
At its heart, Ayurvedic philosophy honours body, mind and consciousness as interconnected parts of our human experience.
Skincare belongs within this wider picture, alongside our daily habits, environment and the changing seasons. Daily Ayurvedic practices, known as dinacharya, gave this philosophy a practical rhythm. Cleansing, applying oils and tending to the body made self-care something to return to regularly.
Something to bring us home. To ourselves.
Plants were selected and prepared for such practices, with knowledge passed between generations. Each plant carried cultural, sensory and spiritual significance alongside their practical purpose.
These traditions invite us to pay attention to the choices we make, the world around us, the world within us and the skin we’re living in.
Science doesn’t replace the ritual. It explains it.
Today, researchers are investigating botanicals long valued in Ayurvedic practice, exploring their constituents and potential skincare applications.
Traditional knowledge offers a rich starting point. Modern science asks more precise questions about the plant, its preparation and its place within a formula.
AyurScience was founded by brothers Rajesh and Mitesh Thakorlal, pharmacists raised within a family deeply connected to Ayurveda. Plant-based preparations and rituals were a formative part of their upbringing.
Through the AyurScience Research Institute, that inherited knowledge informs contemporary skincare formulation.
For me, this connection brings something more personal to the everyday experience of skincare. The founders’ familiarity with these plants meets the art and science of preparing them for modern day skin rituals.
Amla: the jewel of Ayurvedic skincare
Amla, or Indian gooseberry (Phyllanthus emblica), has a longstanding place in Ayurvedic traditions associated with nourishment and daily care.
Classed as a rasayana - a rejuvenating herb, its Sanskrit name Dhatri is often translated as “mother” - reflecting its nourishing reputation.
Its small fruit holds an enduring significance within a philosophy that values tending to ourselves throughout life. That resonates with my own approach to life: Pro-longevity vs. anti-ageing. An invitation to nurture who we are, and the skin we’re living in, through every chapter of life.
Today, Amla extracts are studied for their antioxidant properties, bringing a fresh research perspective to this traditionally treasured botanical.
Within AyurScience’s skincare, Amla forms part of AyurActive™, the brand’s signature botanical complex, alongside Tulsi.
Tulsi: “the incomparable one”
Known for generations as “the incomparable one”- the meaning commonly given to tulasi, the Sanskrit name for Tulsi. Also known as Holy Basil, Sacred Basil, elixir of life, medicine of life and “queen of herbs”.
Tulsi (Ocimum tenuiflorum, also known as Ocimum sanctum) holds a revered place in ancient Ayurvedic tradition. Its presence in Indian households and spiritual practices reflects a longstanding relationship with plants rooted in devotion, care and daily ritual.
Understanding that history can change how we encounter and interact with an ingredient. A name on a label becomes a plant with a place in our lives.
Turmeric: “the golden goddess”
Turmeric (Curcuma longa), with its unmistakably rich, golden colour and a history woven through food, beauty and ceremony.
One of turmeric’s Sanskrit names, Kāñcanī, evokes the golden hue of this revered botanical — a reflection of its rich colour and longstanding place in Ayurvedic tradition.
Turmeric preparations were once used before weddings, connected to a wish for radiant-looking skin with celebration, family and the anticipation of a new chapter. Tending to the skin became part of preparing for a treasured life event.
That is what I love about these practices: the care and the special occasion belonged together.
Saffron: a tradition of radiance
Saffron begins with a flower: Crocus sativus, whose delicate red stigmas become the intensely coloured botanical we recognise.
Across cultures, saffron has occupied a place in food, beauty and celebration. In Ayurvedic complexion care, it has long been associated with a glowing appearance.
Its distinctive colour and fragrance offer another way to appreciate the sensory appeal of botanical preparations. People made time for these practices, and the experience itself became part of their value.
Within AyurScience, saffron is included in selected CLARITY formulations - interweaving that established beauty tradition with a daily practice we can use to catch our breath, and love our skin amidst the fast pace of the world we are living in.
The Ayurscience Research Institute honours the cultural significance of botanical ingredients - their benefits and wisdom - while continuing to invite new questions about how they can be used together to deliver formulas that support healthy, radiant skin, every day and at every stage.
The intelligence is in the formulation
AyurScience is not a brand simply adding botanical extracts to a conventional formula. This is an embodied philosophy - that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts: the botanicals, the complete formula, the daily ritual and the human experiencing it.
That philosophy is built into the architecture of AyurScience’s skincare, with botanical heritage informing ingredient selection and modern science guiding formulation.
A plant’s name is just the beginning. The plant part, extraction method, concentration, stability and compatibility also matter.
Multi-herbal formulation brings together ingredients with different characteristics and complementary roles. The value lies in selecting and combining them with purpose, intention, history, and science.
This is where ingredient transparency becomes not only useful, but essential - understanding what is included, why it has been selected and how the product is intended to be used to meet your unique needs.
Your skin, your senses, your moment
Somewhere between the notifications, the appointments and the endless things asking for our attention, caring for ourselves can become another job on the list.
Even skincare.
Another step to squeeze in. Another moment spent noticing what we’d like to change, rather than appreciating the human looking back at us.
My work often explores stress, joy and the nervous system. My own lived experiences have also taught me how complicated our relationship with our bodies can become.
Sometimes, our skincare ritual is the only moment in the whole day that feels entirely our own.
That time deserves to be treasured.
There is something lovely about tending to ourselves with botanicals that have been held with reverence for generations. We can bring our own attention to that moment: noticing texture, applying a product gently and allowing ourselves to pause.
To slow down for just a little while.
The neuroscience of scent and a splash of joy, every day
A familiar scent can bring a person, place or memory vividly to mind.
Human research has explored this connection between scent, emotional memory and activity in brain regions including the amygdala. It offers a fascinating glimpse into why scent can feel so personal.
AyurScent™, AyurScience’s signature scent blends, brings another sensory detail to the skincare experience - something to notice alongside the texture of a formula and how it feels during application.
For me, this is where joy optimisation belongs - finding small pleasures within things we already do, without saving joy for a special occasion.
Tonight, try setting down your phone before you begin. Take in a long, slow, delicious breath and let out a gentle sigh. Apply your skincare as directed, noticing the texture on your fingertips and the sensation as you smooth it onto your skin.
Let this little “me moment” belong to you. Give yourself permission to drink in a moment that is especially yours.
The art of loving the skin you’re in
Skin longevity, to me, means caring for our skin throughout life. Valuing hydration, comfort and radiance while allowing our faces to remain beautifully human.
Ayurveda offers an enduring appreciation of daily care. AyurScience brings that botanical heritage into modern formulation.
Science doesn’t replace the ritual. It explains it.
And here is the beautiful truth: a ritual doesn’t need to be fancy or elaborate to be meaningful. Choose products suited to your skin, follow their directions and give yourself permission to listen in and adjust as your needs change.
Let it be a familiar moment of care you can keep returning home to. So that you can keep returning home to yourself.
Our skin is an embodiment of life itself. It carries us through every chapter, each one deserving care along the way.
Our skin doesn’t need to be fixed. It needs to be fed - like all living things do - with thoughtful skincare, attention and kindness towards the human living beneath the surface.
Because self-care isn’t “me first”.
Sometimes, it simply means “me too”.
